My Polaris Prize picks

Last night at midnight was the deadline for all Polaris Music Prize  jurors to submit their Top 5 album choices for the 2010 award. I’ve been a juror since 2007, and compared to past years, this round proved to be the toughest. There were about ten albums neck-and-neck, vying for a shot at the Long List.

They all deserved a nod. But while I wish I could’ve submitted a ballot with ten names on it, unfortunately I could only submit five.

Here are the albums I voted for, as well as the runners-up that were so close to claiming a spot.

Please visit the Polaris Music Prize website for rules and details regarding how the selection process works.

1. Basia Bulat. Heart Of My Own. (Secret City).

Listen to “Run.”

2. Tegan & Sara. Sainthood. (Vapor)

Listen to “The Cure.”

3. Justin Rutledge. The Early Widows. (Six Shooter)

Listen to “The Heart Of A River.”

4. Hannah Georgas. This Is Good. (Hidden Pony)

Listen to “Dancefloor.”

5. You Say Party! We Say Die! XXXX. (Paper Bag Records)

Listen to “Lonely’s Lunch.”

In no particular order, here are five additional titles that didn’t make my ballot but deserve a pat on the back!

Broken Social Scene. Forgiveness Rock Record. (Arts & Crafts)

Listen to “All To All.”

Amelia Curran. Hunter Hunter. (Six Shooter)

Listen to “The Mistress.”

Shad. TSOL. (Black Box)

Listen to “Yaa I Get It.”

Amy Millan. Masters Of The Burial. (Arts & Crafts)

Listen to “Into The Dark.”

The Besnard Lakes. The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night. (Jagjaguwar)

Listen to “Albatross.”
