Eyes on the Prize: My picks for this year’s Polaris long-list

Come June 7, jurors like myself will have submitted their top five nominations for this year’s Polaris Prize. It’s not an easy task, whittling away the seventeen Canadian albums you’ve had on repeat for the past year down to a meagre handful, but I’ve managed to narrow things. Hooray, indeed, but my heart breaks for having to cut so many other deserving records.  Here are my choices thus far:

Austra, Feel It Break (Paper Bag Records)

Louise Burns, Mellow Drama (Light Organ Records)

Kathryn Calder, Are You My Mother? (File Under: Music)

Diamond Rings, Special Affections (Secret City Records)

Rae Spoon, Love Is A Hunter (Saved By Radio)

And special recognition goes to:

The Braids, Native Speaker (Flemish Eye)

Black Mountain, Wilderness Heart (Jagjaguwar)

Hey Amanda — nice list. I’m still doing mine. A few days ago, myself, Bryan Acker (Herohill) and Brendan Murphy (like me, ex-Hour) were tweeting back and forth about how many we had locked in. In the past 48 hours I’ve gone from 2 to 3 to 4 and back to 2. Strangely, though, we don’t (at present) have any overlap.
